I am a high school student who really enjoys volunteering at Little Sisters of the Poor. I chose the Jeanne Jugan Center as my Junior service project organization and began helping the Residents during mealtimes and with various activities. After my brother heard me talk about how much I enjoy helping the Residents at Little Sisters, he also wanted to volunteer.
The Activities Director asked us if we would help the groundskeeper maintain the flower gardens. To avoid the heat of the day, the groundskeeper said we should arrive by 6:00 a.m. We enjoy waking up early and walking to the Jeanne Jugan Center while the air is cool.
Lynn trims the hedges and I pull weeds until the temperature begins to rise, then we head inside to work. I love socializing with the Residents and Lynn enjoys working in the kitchen. By 3:00 p.m., we are both worn out, so we head home to talk about our day.
Little Sisters of the Poor has been a great experience for both of us. We have so much fun that most of the time it doesn’t even seem like work. We try to work as hard as we can as repayment for the great hospitality we receive.
