On September 14, three of us apartment residents and one AJJ member from the Jeanne Jugan Center left Kansas City and flew to the Little Sisters’ home in San Pedro, CA. Bob Van Nimwegan, Martha Lally, Margaret Rennau and I were warmly welcomed there by Mother Paul and the Sisters. Five residents from Denver had arrived earlier in the day and soon we were one big happy family. The nine of us spent the next six days together enjoying all the events planned for us. Mother Provincial and Sister Therese were there for a few days as well. Kim Bemis and Jennifer Kaiser, employees from other Little Sisters of the Poor homes, were our hostesses, drivers and cooks. They did a great job
Some of the highlights of our trip were a tour of Hollywood that included the Walk of Fame, movie star homes and Rodeo Drive.
On Wednesday, we departed for Mission San Juan Capistrano. We had the opportunity to tour and pray at the Mission and nearby Basilica. We were guests at the Stone Fire restaurant. Wow! What a meal we had.
Thursday we went to the beach with a packed lunch. Nothing is more restful then sitting by the ocean watching the tide come in and walking barefoot in the sand. After supper we left for a Harbor Cruise narrated by the boat driver and guide. We saw three sea lions sitting on a big rock.
Friday we departed for Knott’s Berry Farm. No one could resist picking up some jam, jelly and gifts. Our lunch was at the famous Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner restaurant. We all brought back leftovers for snacks later.
Saturday morning we said goodbye to everyone and departed for the airport. Mother Dora and Sister Christine were waiting for us once we reached home in Kansas City. They had sandwiches and drinks ready for us.
We unanimously agreed our vacation was a huge success. We are grateful for the opportunity.
